While some historians speculate that Fukuoka might be one of the oldest cities in Japan, modern-day Fukuoka is a fast-growing city with an array of contemporary entertainments. In addition to its many museums showcasing both local and national history, including relics from the 13th century Mongolian invasion, Fukuoka has several beautiful and interesting parks, popular restaurants, and expansive entertainment and shopping districts. Many festivals are held throughout the year, with the Dontaku and Yamakasa festivals, held in March and May respectively, being the oldest and most famous, drawing thousands of spectators. Visitors may also be interested in bathing in the nearby hot springs, or seeing Shofukuji, Japan’s first Zen temple.
